CHART OF THE DAY: Technology Platforms With A Billion Users

Here's a cool, if a bit overwhelming, chart from Horace Dediu at Asymco.

It tracks which platforms have hit a billion users. Windows was first, then Facebook, then Android, and iOS should hit 1 billion in the next year or so, says Dediu.

Android hit the milestone faster than any other platform, reaching 1 billion users in just five years.

AT&T investigating possible $5 billion sale of cell towers

Nearly 10,000 cell towers could be up for sale; AT&T planning to lease back what it sells

Reports today indicate that AT&T is considering a sale of its cell towers to other companies for upwards of $5 billion in order to fund other initiatives in the company. According to sources of Bloomberg, AT&T is partnering up with financial firms TAP Advisors LLC and JPMorgan Chase to explore the merits of selling off the 10,000 cell towers the carrier owns in the US.

These towers currently generate about $326 million in annual revenue from roaming and leasing agreements for AT&T, but reports indicate that an all-out sale of the towers could net it up to $5 billion. The expected buyers of so many towers are expected to be some of the largest tower operators in the country such as American Tower and Crown Castle.

Now a sale of the towers by AT&T doesn't mean that customers will lose coverage area, however. The structure of such agreements usually involves a sale of the physical tower sites as well as an agreement to lease back the use of the towers for its network. Similar deals from T-Mobile in the past netted the company $2.4 billion in 2012, and a similar move by AT&T could give it extra cash it needs to further its other initiatives.

Analyst: GTAV to net $1 billion in sales during first month

Robert W. Baird analyst says larger installed base compared to GTA IV in 2008 and "unprecedented pentup demand" means new game will outpace predecessor at retail.

Grand Theft Auto V will net $1 billion in sales during its first month, outpacing 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV, according to Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian.

"Given the significantly higher installed base of relevant console platforms at launch, greater sales concentration among the top video game franchises, and unprecedented pentup demand, we expect GTAV to outpace GTAIV sales, and generate roughly $1 billion in retail sales during the first month," Sebastian said in a note to investors today.

GTAIV shipped 3.6 million units ($310 million) on launch-day in April 2008, 6 million units ($500 million) during its first week, and 11 million units ($900 million) during the game's first month. The game has shipped 25 million copies to date.

GTAV goes on sale tonight at midnight across the world. Its online component--Grand Theft Auto Online--will be released as a free update on October 1. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

Daily iPhone App: Vert, the beautiful conversion utility

There's no shortage of unit conversion apps on the iPhone. Matter of fact, a unit conversion app was the first app I ever downloaded -- and that app has remained on my iPhone since. That is, until I found Vert. Vert is the most beautifully designed unit conversion app I've ever found. I'll let the screenshots speak for themselves, but as you can see, a lot of care went into the design. Best of all, its flat looks make it a perfect fit for the new iOS 7.

But design is one thing. What people want from a unit conversion app is a wide array of categories. Vert has 30 categories with over 700 different units. Not only do you have your normal weight, length, speed, time and volume units, you also get some units I've never seen before in a conversion app including Hats & Caps, Radioactivity, Shirt & Blouses, Shoes, Suits & Dresses, Typography and Viscosity.

What is great about each category is you can favorite whatever ones you want so you can quickly just view a list of your most frequently converted items. Moreover, inside each category, you can favorite your most-converted units of measurements. For example, if you only use the Teaspoon US and Ounce UK units, you can favorite them so you don't need to scroll through the entire list of units each time.

Other nice features include letting you view your conversion history, support for automatic currency updates for 164 currencies from 249 countries and regions, unit conversion precision up to seven decimals, multiple color themes and sets of unusual units, such as Kardashian, donkeypower, manpower, shot glass, fully loaded 747, Manhattan city block and more. Additionally, Vert will soon be updated with new features, such as the ability to combine units like foot + inch, mile + foot, hour + minutes and pound + ounce; icon view for categories; a new category just for rock climbers; and an organized list of categories (Units of Measurement, Clothing and Other).

Vert is the best unit conversion app I've ever used and is available from the App Store for US$0.99.

Chrome for iOS updated with enhanced search options including pronoun support for voice

The last time Google updated Chrome for iOS, users got the ability to open links to YouTube and Maps directly in their respective apps instead of in the browser. Now the little browser that could has just received its latest upgrade, bringing with it new enhanced search options. These new search features are a welcome addition for regular Chrome for iOS users:

  • Do a search and click a result. Not what you wanted? Now when you hit the back arrow, your search results instantly reappear, ready for you to choose the next link.
  • Improvements to Single Sign On with other Google Apps.
  • View your data savings in Bandwidth Management Settings. This feature is being rolled out and will be available to all users over time.
  • Voice search pronoun support. Try queries like: "Who is the president of the United States?" followed by "Who is his wife?"

The Chrome for iOS update is available for free on the iTunes store, and as always it will appear in Software Updates for those who currently own the app.
